Earth First Farm grows using only 100% natural methods. We uphold the greatest respect for nature and strive to grow with earth conscious decisions and dedication.
Soil
In organic agriculture, plants are fed by the soil rather than water-soluble, petrochemical fertilizers. The microorganisms that live in our soil are essential for maintaining a healthy, soil food web and growing clean, nutritious produce. Here at Earth First Farm, we feed our soil using compost, organic matter, minerals, and cover crops. With time and dedication, we are able to slowly, but surely, improve our soils.
Pests and Diseases
Pests and diseases are always a challenge for natural growers. Ideally, we follow the philosophy of growing strong, vigorous plants with healthy immune systems that are able to overcome environmental pressures. When our efforts are insufficient, we use physical barriers rather than chemical solutions for a majority of pests. An agricultural fabric protects vulnerable plants from hungry pests. Handpicking and trap cropping is also used for various crops and situations. Diseases are deterred by the use of crop rotation, foliar feeding, and controlling moisture with the use of greenhouses (tomatoes).
There is also an ongoing effort to increase the farm’s ecosystem as a whole. With abundance of plant diversity and habitat, wildlife and beneficial insects share the garden and feed on common pests.
Weed Management
Weeds are controlled by frequent cultivation using our bare hands or simple tools. The motto is early and often. We also heavily rely on organic mulches to smother weeds and cover the soil. We are currently experimenting with various stale seed bed techniques as well.
